Welcome to the University High School Class of 1957 Website

   Hey Gang- Hey Gang
      Hey Hey
      How's our team?
      The teams all right
       And who said so?
       Everybody
       And whose everybody?
        All the fans
        Then give fifteen cheers
 for The Colonel Clan

The class of '57 had 67 members and we were as diverse as any class in the state. Many members lived in Oxford, some on the Ole Miss campus and others in the county and some on working farms. For a class that small we had a high percentage attend college.

Several went to Ole Miss, Junior College, Blue Mountain, and one each to Harvard, Yale and Rice; some went into military and some began work for the U.S. Government. Our Harvard student went on to Harvard Law School and our Yale student attended University of Virginia Law School. We had 2 members attend Ole Miss on a Naval ROTC Scholarship. Our football and basketball team were average but one running back and receiver were All Little Ten Conference as well as one of our "shooting" forwards on the basketball team. Average or not our crowd of student fans created much excitement. Several members were in the school band. Our senior year, as well as years prior, they received a Superior rating at the yearly Mississippi High School Band Fair in Jackson.

Our shooting forward played two years at Northwest Junior College; the running back played one year at Ole Miss on the Freshman team and our receiver, at Yale, on national television, not only intercepted a pass against Harvard but returned it for a touchdown. One could hear the UHS alumni shouting for joy. Hutch, you made us proud! One class member was listed in the "Favorites" section of our Yearbook in four categories. She later retired from Ole Miss as Dean of Students.  And how about the student who entered our senior year and we thought he was a junior. He went to Davidson College for a year; returned to Oxford and was at Ole Miss only 2 years and graduated. He graduated from high school in 3 years, college in 3 years and walked on the Medical School Campus in Jackson when he was 20. But the story does not end here. He was later The Battalion Surgeon, a Captain, in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam and later coauthored a book about the experience. Top that Hollywood!

Four members retired from the military; two from the U.S. Air Force, one from the U.S. Army and one from the U.S. Navy. Gentlemen, we are forever grateful.

Yes, we were very diverse.

We have remained in contact over the years. The reunion every five years brought us closer but with the internet almost everyone communicates with several others on a daily basis. In addition to the reunions we had our own 50th in Oxford in 2007 and pockets of us gather for other events such as an away game for Ole Miss. And unfortunately, for a funeral.

We wanted the Class of '57 to have this personalized web site to share our life story, success, and heart aches.

God bless the Class of 1957!
